Quotes to Consider

Prof. David J. Engelsma: “As under the old covenant, so in the new, the gathering takes place in the line of the generation of believers (Acts 2:39), where the gathering of the church takes place by the calling of the children of believers, as well as by missions. The calling (or building) is solely the work of God in Christ, not whatever the work of the church itself. The church does not gather herself! Here, the Reformed doctrine of the church distinguishes itself from that both of the Roman Catholic Church and of Arminian Protestantism, which ascribe to the members of the church themselves the decisive power of free will to add themselves to the church.”

David Prior: “Habakkuk rehearses qualities in God which are basic, simple and strong: Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, my Holy One? (12). The Chaldeans were a relatively recent phenomenon on the world stage. Their power and presence were growing all the time; but they were only human beings, with all the frailty and foibles of mere mortals. Even if Habakkuk remained unconvinced of their vulnerability and their ephemerality, simply recollecting the everlasting nature of God introduced a different perspective. The secret is not so much to persuade ourselves that powerful people and monolithic structures are only temporal and temporary as to focus on God’s eternal changelessness and essential divinity. Habakkuk’s language in this prayer is reminiscent of Moses’ final prayer of blessing for the people of Israel, with its affirmation that ‘underneath are the everlasting arms’ (Dt. 33:27). Equally (and especially if he was a professional prophet in the temple in Jerusalem), it is likely that Habakkuk was instinctively drawing on the psalmody of the nation’s worship” (The Message of Joel, Micah and Habakkuk, p. 219).

Announcements (subject to God’s will)

After a week of self-examination, CPRC confessing members in good standing are called to partake of the Lord’s Supper. Your participation in the sacrament of Christ’s body and blood is in part a witness that you repent of your sins, believe in Jesus Christ as your only righteousness, and desire to live a new and godly life. As this heavenly food can be taken to one’s judgment (I Cor. 11:28-30) and as the common reception of the Lord’s Supper is a confession of doctrinal unity (Acts 2:42), the elders supervise the partaking of the sacrament. Visitors who are members of other denominations must already have presented to the Council an attestation from their church that they are confessing members in good standing and have received permission from the Council to partake of the Lord’s Supper.

Family visitation (Titus 2-3) continues this week:
Monday – 7 PM: Wattersons; 8 PM: J. McCaugherns; 9 PM: B. McCaugherns

Tuesday Bible study meets this week at 11 AM to conclude Acts 14.
