Quotes to Consider:

Martyn Lloyd-Jones: “It is interesting to notice what [Paul] says about children. What are their characteristics? They are unstable, fickle, ignorant. They like novelty, dislike work but like play. They dislike being made to think and to reason; they like entertainment and excitement … Above all, they are liable to be deceived by that which is false. They are liable, in fact, by their very nature to be ‘carried about with every wind of doctrine’ because their understanding is not fully developed. They are ‘children;’ they have the essential life, but they need to develop, to grow, to be perfected, in order that they may be able more effectively to recognize and guard themselves against that which is false” (Knowing the Times, p. 145).

Charles Hodge on Ephesians 4:14: “There are two things in this connection which can hardly escape notice. The one is the high estimate the apostle places on truth; and the other is the evil of error. Holiness without the knowledge and belief of the truth is impossible; perfect holiness implies, as verse 13 teaches, perfect knowledge. Error, therefore, is evil. Religious error springs from moral evil and produces it. ‘False teachers’ are in Scripture always spoken of as bad, as selfish, malignant, or deceitful.”

James Durham: “[God] may furnish men with gifts that are of themselves good, and justly permit them to use the same, for the promoting of error. This has been often exceedingly instrumental, in the furthering of Satan’s design in all ages, wherein he has made use of some great scholars, and men of subtle wits to oppose the truth, and to pervert the Scriptures of God, as is clear in all the heresies that ever have been … Thus often promoters of error may be gifted with ability to reason, make queries, shift arguments and places of Scripture, preach well, pray well with a great deal of eloquence, and liberty of plausible expressions … yet the Lord’s end is to try [his people]” (Concerning Scandal, pp. 142-143).
