Quotes to Consider

Charles Hodge on Ephesians 3:10: “The Bible clearly teaches not only that the angels take a deep interest in the work of redemption, but that their knowledge and blessedness are increased by the exhibition of the glory of God in the salvation of men.”

Martin Luther: “But the truly humble look not to the result of humility but with a simple heart regard things of low degree and gladly associate with them. It never enters their minds that they are humble. Here the water flows from the well; here it follows naturally and as a matter of course that they will cultivate humble conduct, humble words, places, faces, and clothing, and, so far as possible, will shun great and lofty things. Thus David says in Ps. 131:1: ‘O Lord, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too high.’ And Job 22:29 says: ‘He who has been humbled shall be in glory; and he who bows down his eyes shall be saved.’ Hence honors always come unexpectedly to them, and their exaltation is a surprise; for they have been content with their lowly station and have never aspired to the heights. But the falsely humble wonder why their glory and honor are so long in coming; their secret false pride is not content with their low estate but aspires in secret ever higher and higher. True humility, therefore, never knows that it is humble, as I have said; for it if knew, it would turn proud from contemplation of so fine a virtue” (What Luther Says, p. 671).

American Theological Professor in Ballymena

Theological professor, Brian Huizinga, from the USA will be preaching for the Covenant Protestant Reformed Church (CPRC) in Ballymena this Sunday (11 August). Prof. Huizinga is coming to County Antrim with his wife, Michelle, and some of their children after speaking on the Bible’s teaching on the end times at the British Reformed Fellowship (BRF) Family Conference (3-10 August) in Shropshire in England.

Prof. Brian HuizingaProf. Huizinga has had two books published this year. The first deals with an important but little treated subject: God’s rewarding His children. Are there degrees of reward for believers? How does the Lord reward His people in this world and the next? How does this fit with salvation by grace alone? Crowning His Gifts: Gracious Rewards in the Reformed Tradition addresses these issues and more.

Lecturer in Dogmatics and Old Testament studies, Prof. Huizinga’s second new book, Union With Christ, was co-authored with Prof. David Engelsma. Huizinga’s chapters explain the glory of the changeless Lord Jesus, the Lamb of God, to whom His children are united through the Holy Spirit and by faith; our union with Christ in eternal election; and the new man that God creates when He unites us to His Son in our spiritual rebirth.

Prof. Brian Huizinga will be preaching for the CPRC at both the 11 a.m. and 6 p.m services this Sunday, where we will be joined by visitors from Australia, Brazil, California, Michigan, Singapore, etc. All are very welcome to attend these meetings at 83 Clarence Street, Ballymena, BT42 3NR, and they can also be watched live and on-line (www.cprc.co.uk/live-streaming).
