Quotes to Consider

Herman Hoeksema on Lord’s Day 33: “The quickening of the new man is first and essentially the work of God. Our active participation in putting on the new man is always the fruit of the work of God’s grace in our hearts. This is taught in Romans 6. We were not only buried with Christ by baptism unto his death, but we were also raised with him unto newness of life. ‘If we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.’ ‘Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord’ (vv. 5, 11). On the basis of this work of God, the apostle admonished the members of the church not only to mortify the old man, but also to yield themselves to God, as those who are alive from the dead, and to yield their members as instruments of righteousness unto God (v. 13). This yielding of our members as instruments of righteousness unto God is our act of putting on the new man. It signifies constant endeavors to place ourselves and our entire lives under the gracious dominion of the new life in Christ. Also this putting on of the new man is not accomplished without the operation of the Spirit of God in Christ. It is not true that we were raised with Christ once and that now we put on the new man by our efforts. The contrary is true: God is always first. Only when he continuously works in our hearts by his Holy Spirit can we be active, as the fruit of his grace in us, in putting on the new man” (Love the Lord Thy God, pp. 114-115).

William Henry Green on Job’s 3 friends: “They advocate and approve what is good; they reject and condemn the bad. Their discourses sparkle with gems of morality and religious truth. The principles which they propound are mostly just and unexceptionable as general maxims. It is only the application which they make of them to a case that they do not really cover, which is false” (Conflict and Triumph, p. 58).
