Quote to Consider

John G. Butler on Nehemiah 7:2: “Hananiah’s appointment emphasizes an important aspect of promotion. That important aspect of promotion has to do with how well you are doing your current job. If you want to advance in your job, do a good job where you are currently employed. Some folk want promotions, but never relate promotions to their present duty. Hananiah obviously had done a good job as ‘the ruler of the palace’ or Nehemiah would not have promoted him to be one of the rulers of the city. Second, his practice. Hananiah is said in our text to be ‘a faithful man.’ This is a great compliment of Hananiah or of anyone for that matter. It meant that he was trustworthy and performed his tasks with diligence. How important it is to be faithful in life. The adage which says, ‘Dependability is the best ability,’ is true” (Nehemiah: The Wall Builder, p. 185).
