Quote to Consider

Herman Hoeksema on Lord’s Day 42: “According to [Zacharius] Ursinus, there are various Christian virtues presupposed in the keeping of the eighth commandment, such as commutative justice, contentment, fidelity, liberality, hospitality, parsimony, and frugality. All these virtues can be subsumed under the head of the one principal virtue of contentment, which is the opposite of covetousness, which is the root of all evil … Contentment has respect to the relation between the things we have and the desire of our hearts with regard to them. Contentment is the perfect equilibrium between the two, the constant adaptation of the one to the other, the continuous adjustment of one’s inner state to outward circumstances. It is the positive answer to the question, do you have enough? It answers affirmatively to the query, are you satisfied? The opposite is discontent, which gives the negative answer to these questions in every instance. When the inner state of our hearts and minds, our desires and longings with respect to earthly things, is wholly in accord with the measure of earthly things we possess, with our circumstances, with the way that we must travel, with the experiences we are called to pass through, and when this harmony between outward circumstances and the inner state of our hearts and minds is essentially an adjustment of the heart to the circumstances, then we are content. The cause of contentment lies not in things but in the heart. It is not from without but from within” (Love Thy Neighbor for God’s Sake, pp. 141, 142).
