Quotes to Consider

John G. Butler on Nehemiah 3: “The men listed in this third chapter of Nehemiah were for the most part gallant men who dared to live by faith and lead their nation in God’s work by coming forward to give their time and energy to construct the walls of Jerusalem. It takes men of this caliber to make a great nation and a great church. Whiners, sluggards, and draft dodgers never make a great nation or church” (Nehemiah: The Wall Builder, p. 71).

Dean R. Ulrich on Nehemiah 3: “This chapter emphasizes every-member ministry. The high priest’s name may appear first in connection with the Sheep Gate, but he hardly receives credit for the rest of the wall. By the time the reader reaches verse 32, the high priest’s name has blended with all the other names to give the impression that the whole community (clergy and laity) took part. Something else to note in this regard is the absence of Nehemiah’s name. This chapter does not glorify him either. Chapter 2 may credit him with providing the motivation for the project, but chapter 3 focuses on his team” (Now and Not Yet, p. 111).
