Quotes to Consider:

Matthew Poole on Psalm 127:3: “… although God give children and other outward comforts to ungodly men in the way of common providence, yet He gives them only to his people as favours, and in the way of promise and covenant.”

Henry Smith (1560-1591): “Well doth David call children ‘arrows’: for if they be well bred, they shoot at their parents’ enemies; and if they be evil bred, they shoot at their parents.”

Joseph Hall (1574-1656): “I remember a great man coming into my house, at Waltham, and seeing all my children standing in the order of their age and stature, said, ‘These are they that make rich men poor.’ But he straight received this answer, ‘Nay, my lord, these are they that make a poor man rich; for there is not one of these whom we would part with for all your wealth.’”

John Calvin on Exodus 34:28: “If [Moses] had only been kept a few days in the mount, his authority would not have been ratified by so conspicuous a miracle; but the forty days obtained full credit for his mission, so that the people might know that he was sent by God; inasmuch as the endurance of a fast for so long a period exceeded the capacity of human nature. Wherefore, in order that the majesty of the Law might be indubitable, its minister was invested with angelic glory; and hence he expressly records that ‘he did neither eat bread, nor drink water,’ since it was requisite that he should be distinguished from other mortals, in order that his official character might be unquestionable.”
