Quotes to Consider

Douglas Moo on James 1:19: “Psychologists will sometimes claim that emotions, since they are a natural product of the personality, cannot truly be controlled—only suppressed or ignored. But James’s exhortation here (and many similar biblical exhortations) presume differently. Emotions are the product of the entire person; and, by God’s grace and the work of the Spirit, the person can be transformed so as to bring emotions in line with God’s word and will” (The Letter of James, p. 83).

Prof. Herman Hanko on James 1:20: “Doctrinal preaching does not have a very good reputation in today’s church world. It is said to be divisive, especially when it necessarily condemns false doctrines and exposes their unbiblical character. Doctrinal preaching is criticized as being ‘over the heads’ of people—a criticism that comes from those who never read solid biblical material and who are not accustomed to thinking of spiritual things. Quickly they clamor for ‘practical preaching’ and become angry when the minister fails to listen to them. There is a certain irony here, however. It is my experience that in many instances, when a minister preaches an intensely practical sermon, these are the first to become angry at that preaching as well and to complain that there is altogether too much emphasis in the preaching on sin and its consequences” (Faith Made Perfect, p. 63).
