Quote to Consider

Prof. Herman Hanko on Galatians 4:3: “The likeness of the church to a child lies at the heart of the analogy. The church was like a child because the church did not yet have the Spirit of Christ, by whom the church becomes mature sons and daughters in Father’s house … The law gave instruction in the Old Testament. Israel was like a child who had not yet learned completely the principles of life in the church—that the church walks by faith in Jesus Christ. So the law, while holding the nation in bondage to it, taught the nation what is meant to believe in Christ” (Justified Unto Liberty, pp. 272-273).

Herman Hoeksema on Lord’s Day 51: “[The believer] desires the forgiveness of sins. He desires to possess it and to be assured of it in his deepest heart. I long to know and be assured that God has so forgiven, dismissed, and cancelled my debts and so clothed me with eternal righteousness that I am still the object of his favor, and that he gives me eternal life. I want to have that blessing of the forgiveness of sins now, at once, in this world, while I am still in the flesh, in which everything testifies against me, condemns me, and speaks of wrath and death and hell. I desire to have it, not as something that will deliver me from the guilt of sins I committed in the past, but even while I am still sinful and still sinning. That is the amazing wonder and boldness of this petition” (The Perfect Prayer, p. 161).
