Quote to Consider

Don Doezema on John 5:4, 6: “Perhaps, as Calvin and Fairbairn suggest, these miracles [at the pool of Bethesda] were intended by God to serve as evidence for His people, in those days in which there was no prophecy, that God had not forsaken them; and further, ‘the limitation and restraint thrown around them (one person at a time, and only at intervals, DD), showed that greater things than these were needed to restore the lapsed and fallen condition of Israel’ (Fairbairn). It pointed them, in other words, to Christ, the author of their salvation … ‘Wilt thou be made whole?’ Jesus asked him (5:6). There could have been, of course, no question concerning the man’s desire to be made whole. The earnest inquiry of Christ served, however, to make Himself the object not only of the man’s attention but also of his renewed hope. At the same time, it draws out of the man an acknowledgment of his own utter helplessness …” (Upon This Rock, vol. 1, p. 111).
