Quotes to Consider:

John Calvin on will worship: “All worship of man’s device is repudiated by the Holy Spirit as degenerate” (Institutes 1.5.3).

“It must be regarded as a fixed principle that all modes of worship devised by man are detestable” (1.11.4).

“He has been pleased to prescribe in His law what is lawful and right and thus restrict men to a certain rule, lest any should allow themselves to devise a worship of their own” (1.12.3).

“The Lord cannot forget Himself, and it is long since He declared that nothing is so offensive to Him as to be worshiped by human inventions” (4.10.17).

John Eadie on Colossians 2:20: “The church can enjoy neither life nor growth, if misunderstanding Christ’s person or undervaluing His work, it ha[s] no vital union with Him … if its worship look up to angels, and not to Him to whom ‘all power is given in heaven and in earth;’ if it place its trust in ritual observances and bodily service, it cannot be one either with Him or with other portions of His church.”

A. W. Pink on Exodus 32:13: “Now that which Moses pleaded before God from his Word were the promises which He had made to the patriarchs. This, too, is recorded for our learning. It is the humble, simple, trustful spreading of the Divine promises before the throne of grace which secures the ear of God. That is what real prayer is: a presenting of our need before the Lord, and then reverently reminding Him of His own declaration that He will supply it. It is a confident asking with David, ‘Do as Thou hast said’ (II Sam. 7:25). This is what the ‘exercise of faith’ signifies: a laying hold of God’s promises, an ‘embracing’ (Heb. 11:13) of them, a counting upon them. ‘Hath He said and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?’ (Num. 23:19)” (Gleanings in Exodus, p. 323).
