Quotes to Consider:
Herman Hoeksema on Exodus 32:32: “… the book of God to which Moses here refers is not a mere registration of all actually living men in the world, and the plea of Moses does not merely seek the end of his earthly life, nor is this statement a proud and sinful utterance of a despairing soul! Mistaken are they, who would so interpret this astounding petition. For, the book of God is the record of His elect of the heirs of the promise, of the beloved from before the foundation of the world, the book that was sovereignly written, which is not the result of a divine census taken of all that would believe and persevere, but out of which the elect are called to life and faith, to righteousness and eternal glory” (Standard Bearer, vol. 12, p. 75).
John Murray: “The rest of the Sabbath is not idleness; it is activity in the sacred exercise of meditation, contemplation, and prayer. If we have this interest there is not a moment for weariness or boredom. The Sabbath day is not one minute too long for us. Is that not the Lord’s witness to the people of old, and even more relevantly to us? ‘Call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable … Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord’ (Isa. 58:13, 14). God’s own rest is not that of idleness or inactivity. It is that of joy and satisfaction in the works he has wrought. So must ours be” (Collected Writings, vol. 1, pp 227-228).
Lewis Bayly (Puritan, d. 1632): “The Sabbath day is God’s market-day for the weeks provision, wherein He will have us to come unto him and buy of him without silver or money, the Bread of Angels, and Water of life, the Wine of the Sacraments, and Milk of the Word to feed our souls: tried Gold, to enrich our Faith: precious Eyesalve, to heal our spiritual blindness: and the white Raiment of Christ’s Righteousness, to cover our filthy nakedness.”
