Quote to Consider

Herman Hoeksema on Lord’s Day 11: “In [Jesus] God reconciled us unto himself, not imputing our trespasses unto us. In the death and resurrection of Jesus, Jehovah is revealed to us as the God of our salvation who justifies the ungodly. That is the meaning of the name Jesus. But that is not all. If it were all, he would not be Jesus. He must accomplish not only salvation for us and on our behalf, but also realize salvation within us. Not only our state, our legal status before God, must be changed from guilt to perfect and everlasting righteousness, but also our actual condition must undergo a complete and radical change, a change that is nothing less than a resurrection from the dead. We must be redeemed from sin and delivered from sin. We must be changed from death into life, from darkness into light, from rebellious and cursing children of the devil into dear children of God, from the misery and desolation of our natural state into the glory of heavenly perfection. Our whole nature must be radically turned about, so that the image of God is restored in us, and instead of loving the lie we love and do the truth” (The Death of the Son of God, p. 21).
