Quotes to Consider:
Rev. Ron Hanko: “The revelation of the covenant made to David is unique, however, in several respects. It brings together covenant and kingdom and shows that they are very closely related. God promises to establish David’s kingdom and his throne forever (II Sam. 7:12-13), a promise that is fulfilled in Christ, the King of kings (Luke 1:32-33). In showing that covenant and kingdom belong together, God teaches David and us some important truths. The relationship between covenant and kingdom shows the orderly structure of the covenant. In that covenant God’s people are citizens of a kingdom, each with his proper place under God’s own rule. The ‘throne’ of which God speaks (II Sam. 7:13) is really always God’s throne, even when a man like David sits on it. This connection between covenant and kingdom also reveals the spiritual nature of the kingdom. There are many today who have the same earthly and carnal conception of the kingdom that the Pharisees had at the time of Jesus’ ministry. They think that the whole world is, or will be, the kingdom of God; that the kingdom is here on earth before Christ’s return and is composed of a society dominated by Christians. Or they think that the kingdom will be an earthly Jewish state modelled after the kingdom of Israel in the Old Testament and that it will be set up prior to the return of Christ. God makes clear that these conceptions are wrong by connecting the coming of the kingdom with the promise of the covenant” (Doctrine According to Godliness, pp. 178-179).
John Calvin: “Nothing is more easy than to corrupt the pure worship of God, when men esteem God after their sense and wit … As soon as the purity of the worship of God is impaired, there no longer remains anything perfect or sound, and faith itself is utterly ruined.”
