Quote to Consider:
Herman Hoeksema on Philippians 3:17: “Presumptuous it would be, indeed, for any man so to exhort his fellow man, thus to admonish the Church of Christ, if he should so speak merely as man! No man could possibly have authority so to speak. Nor could any man be our example. One is our Master, even Christ. One is our Lord, even He Who died for us and rose again and purchased us with His own blood, redeeming us from this present wicked world. One is our example, even He Who also gave us His Spirit and grace to walk even as He walked. One only has authority to exhort us to follow Him, He that has the testimony of the Father: This is My beloved Son, hear Him! … But the apostle is not thinking of himself as man. Hence, the me becomes us in the very next clause, referring to the apostles. Be followers of me, not as man, but as the apostle, called by Jesus Christ together with all the apostles, to whom God had revealed the hidden wisdom, which no eye hath seen, nor ear heard, nor ever arose in the heart of man, through His Spirit that was given them, that searcheth all things, even the deep things of God. Me and us, as we speak the Word of God, as Christ speaks through us, becomes manifest in us, in our word and in our walk, follow, so that in following us, ye follow ultimately and really the chief Captain and Finisher of our faith, Jesus. Be imitators of us, that ye may be imitators of Christ, that ye may be imitators of God!”
