Quotes to Consider:
John Calvin on Ezekiel 18:3: “For what else is it than openly to reproach God when impure men approach him, and [ask] to become partakers of his counsel? Meanwhile they show by their whole life that they are most inveterate enemies of the whole heavenly doctrine.”
William Greenhill on Ezekiel 18:3: “When any thing becomes an idol in the heart, as covetousness, wantonness, ceremony, any way of false worship, any foolish or blasphemous opinion, it is no easy matter to get down that idol.”
James Durham: “An idol is something excessively esteemed of, and idolatry is the transferring of God’s due, outwardly or inwardly, to what is not God …” (A Practical Exposition of the Ten Commandments, p. 76).
Homer Hoeksema on Exodus 32:1-6: “Hence, we conclude that they here rejected God, His revelation, His servant Moses, His works, His covenant, and chose other gods, which they made which they carried about, and which they could control, so that they could go where and when they wanted, and which they could serve as they pleased. And they lied to themselves and all the people, ‘These be thy gods that brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.’”
